Basel

Basel1a.jpg

An early start, we headed to the Kunstmuseum, where there was a Jasper Johns exhibition. The collection at this museum is very impressive - there are many famous works from the last century and earlier.

Outside lemon trees grew.

In the city centre there are some charming shops and a lot of trams.

Then after a meeting and lunch, we headed out to the Schaulager building.
This is an impressive building. Dedicated to contemporary art, and resembling a municipal car park, the building houses a huge collection of works in storage, with current exhibitions on the ground and basement floors.

Thanks a lot!

Day Trip To Brighton

August 28, 2007

TopTrumps1.jpg

At the station, I noticed the card game 'Top Trumps'. I hadn't seen this school coach favourite for a long time, but it looks to have been updated.
There were a few themes available, and I chose Dogs.

If you haven't played before, the basic aim is to 'trump' your opponent's card. Each Dog has certain attributes, and the players take it in turn to call out these and see if their dog has higher points. A Rottweiler has higher guard-dog skills than a Chihuahua for example. Each time you beat your opponent, you capture their card.

TopTrumps2.jpg

Eventually, I was just left with the Cairn Terrier. This card was dreadful - the Dog is small, common, a poor guard-dog and not especially loveable. It's a really useless Dog.

In the town, there was an exhibition of classic Polish movie posters at CraneKalman.

Then down to the beachfront.

The Parlour

August 26, 2007

TheParlour.jpg

London had sun again yesterday, and I went by Fortnum and Mason's new ice cream bar, The Parlour.
By current London standards, the service is and presentation is very good, as are the flavours. If like me, you like ice-cream, this is surely the most civil setting to eat it in Central London.

Dreaming of Summer

August 25, 2007

Marylin2.jpg

The bad weather this week has been really depressing.
At points, it has felt just like winter... but this weekend is looking OK.
A package just arrived from Ryota of Ravage.
I like photo-print t-shirts the best. It looks like Marylin is dreaming of summer too.
Thanks RT!

Fernandez And Wells

Once Maletti, it seems that Fernandez And Wells has now become the popular haunt for Upper James Street employees.

Craig and Richard discuss the merits of the menu.

Jesus Camp

August 23, 2007

JesusCamp.jpg

I'm not sure quite what happened with the cinema release of this documentary. Perhaps I just missed it.
Anyway, after following the trailers on YouTube, I ordered the DVD.
The film follows the children and staff at a summer camp in Missouri USA, documenting the unusual methods in which the children are urged to become soldiers in the Evangelical 'Christian Army'. I think most people will be surprised at the level and extremes the staff and guests go to in order to make sure the children follow this path.
The camp would make a fairly easy target for liberal film-makers, but the end result is handled quite fairly.

Hip Leeds

August 22, 2007

Umberto and Everton visited today from Leeds. Their store HIP originally opened in 1987, making it one of the UK's most well-known select clothing stores. Everton talked a little about their plans for the shops 20th anniversary this year - congratulations!

Dr. Martens Boots

August 18, 2007

DrMarten1.JPG

I went to visit the Dr. Martens factory the other day, and got to watch a pair of boots being made from start to finish.

This is the finished 8-hole Cherry-Red boot, remade to the original specifications from the 1960's.

I think the brand holds a certain kind of affection from all kinds of people in the UK. Celebrity fans through the years include the band Radical Posture.

It was raining really hard in London this morning.
Sheltering at the Tube station I saw Gilbert & George.

Alpha Dogwear

August 13, 2007

AlphaDog1.JPG

At the Alpha Industries office, we discussed the rise of Dog clothing amongst other things. I'm not really a big fan of dogs, but found it interesting to see the line-up.
I saw a Dog MA-1 a year or so ago, but Alpha now produce a range including Dog N-3B, Dog M-65, Dog Pea Coat and various Dog Naval Sweaters. The renditions of the jackets are pretty well done - look out for the Pea Coat this winter.

A very exciting announcement on Thursday - Lord Lucan had possibly been spotted in New Zealand!

2007 - Was this the man?

By Friday however, we learnt that it was all a coincidence, and the man with the Possum was Roger Woodgate, an ex-Ministry Of Defence photographer who emigrated in the same year as Lucan's disappearance.

For more images of Lord Lucan, check out his wife's website.

Baracuta G9

August 07, 2007

StussyBaracuta.jpg

Last year, Stussy began working with the English company Baracuta, using the classic G9 jacket - the original Harrington style.
The G9 is always a favourite at Trad. stores.
This year, there will be some new styles coming soon. I like this version with classic 'ivy' style colours...

Deckchairs

August 05, 2007

deckchair1.jpg

Deckchairs are a typically British sight in the summer, and although this summer has been especially bad weather-wise, this project is quite interesting.

For the Royal Parks in London, various artists, pop-stars and school children have been asked to provide designs for the chairs. Usually blue and white stripes, the deckchairs are now a variety of patterns drawings and designs.

deckchair2.jpg

I like the Damien Hirst butterfly one best - there are pink (girls) and blue (boys) versions, but I couldn't find any blue ones when I walked through St James' Park yesterday. Maybe people were already sitting on them.

To rent a chair costs £2 for 4 hours. Limited numbers of these chairs were also available to buy too, but I'm not sure how many are left now...

Mirror Of Africa

August 01, 2007

mapmirror.jpg

This mirror is a special edition from a run of art prints for cult group Map Of Africa.
Produced in conjunction with Gimme 5 and Whatever We Want Records, they have been printed in the same facility as many contemporary fine art prints.
Featuring the same artwork as the debut LP, the prints will come on mirrored paper in the vein of classic rock and concert posters of the past.
