Stone Island

FourMarketing1.jpg

Craig and I went to see Carl at the Four Marketing office this morning, to take a quick look at next season's Stone Island range. There are some interesting new projects in the pipeline, which may change some people's perception of the brand, particularly in the UK.

The Red Balloon/Le Ballon Rouge

February 28, 2008

RedBalloonBook.jpg

I remember the film 'The Red Balloon' from childhood - I think there was a TV slot on BBC2 which showed classic foreign films at around 2pm - and I suppose that was the first time I saw it.
Anyway, I found this photo-book from the film the other day - very nostalgic pictures.

*UPDATE*
The TV show was an ITV schools programme called 'PICTURE BOX'.
Thanks Hayder!

Unissued US Military watch by Hamilton from April 1973.
The packaging is so simple, and makes the piece feel very special.

Former Unorthodox-Styles/Crooked Tongues staff, Sean, is re-locating to Shanghai in the very near future and came by to catch up and run through some of his plans working with the ACU crew for their 1st Anniversary. Congratulations Tom and co, and good luck Sean!

NBHD x THE HIDEOUT Stud Jacket

NBHDpatch.jpg

This is a detail from a new piece I've been working on for The Hideout anniversary, made together with the kind help of all at Neighborhood. Featuring a lot of stud-work, the jacket has a similar spirit to the carefully hand-worked Biker jackets seen in the UK from the 1950's.
This will release along with with some t-shirts styles in the near future.

Heiroglyphics at the British Museum

February 19, 2008

The British Museum has one of my favourite gift shops of any museum, and always seems to have something new to find.
Famous for holding the largest collection of Ancient Egyptian pieces outside of Egypt, it is appropriate that the museum had some good Egypt-related souvenirs.

Peter Rabbit book in Heiroglyphic version and Pebble Charms with lucky words - reminiscent of the Stussy 'Love Beads'.

I like visiting the malls outside of the main shopping areas where the rent is still cheap.
You can find all sorts of unusual independents, often where products go to die - and the owners never have sales.
This sunglasses store was filled with Bausch and Lomb-era Ray Bans of all styles.

Fish Reflexology

February 12, 2008

On Sentosa Island, there is a Fish Reflexology Spa.
Pools are filled with 2 different types of Doctor Fish, which bite at your feet and consume dead skin. This is known as the 'nibbling massage'. Then follows a reflexology massage by humans.

Advanced Pool with bigger fish.

Fish3.jpg

You must cover-up any cuts with a plaster so that the fish will not attack too hard.

Fish4.jpg
At the beginning the experience feels very strange - the fish start very quickly and swarm over you feet and lower legs. The sensation feels somewhere between tickling and short electric shocks, and as time goes on, the shocks become harder. By the end, your feet will be very smooth and relaxed.

Brooks Brothers British Edition

Made-in-USA, this is the original button-down style made for the anniversary of the first London store. I like this model of shirt a lot, so it was nice to find this version.

Cloverfield

Cloverfield.jpg

No-one was ill while I was at the cinema.
These signs made me think of the similar techniques they used to scare the audience when Psycho was first released in theatres. I don't think that there was a much marketing in the UK as in the US, but this is a very exciting movie experience.

Edward Burtynsky

February 02, 2008

EdwardBurtynsky1.jpg

Saturday is the last day to see the 'Quarries' series by Edward Burtynsky at Flowers Central gallery.

As with his other works, the images look at new kinds of landscapes made by man.
Many of these quarries are huge cut-aways into the earth, the scale of which has to be seen to be believed.

EdwardBurtynsky2.jpg

Otherwise, check out the incredible documentary 'Manufactured Landscapes' which visits the world of industrialisation in China. Watching this throws up a lot of questions about progress, development and the value of life in the world today.
