Julian Schnabel
March 5, 2008
I've been interested in two Julian Schnabel works recently.
Firstly, I went to see the movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly the other evening.
This is a true story about ex-French Elle editor, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who suffers a stroke and is left paralysed with the rare 'locked-in' syndrome. This leaves him able to operate his left eye and eyelid only, and through this he develops a way of communicating. There are moments of despair and moments of great beauty in the film, and most of the audience remained sitting in silence until the end of the credits.
The other project I have been following is the Palazzo Chupi building.
Described as 'Pompeii Red', and having received very mixed reviews, this is a very unusual looking site in the West Village, N.Y.
Recent photos from Vanity Fair show the interior and an interesting looking swimming-pool.
I look forward to my next visit to Manhattan so I can see the building in person.
