Levi's In Belgium

March 26, 2008

Brussels8.jpg
I haven't needed to use the Eurostar for a little while, so it was my first time to use the Kings Cross station yesterday. They made a very nice job of it.

Brussels7.jpg
Weather was very strange in Brussels - snow was inches thick on the ground in places, and snow storms were interspersed with sunshine...

The trip was to discuss future Stussy projects in the Levi's design studio...

Wolf Of Wall Street

March 24, 2008

WolfOfWallStreet.jpg

I'm always attracted to this kind of book - an autobiography chronicling a 'crash and burn'.
This is the true story of Jordan Belfort, who started the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont Inc. which operated during the 90's, and was later involved in Steve Madden shoes. He led a very disfunctional personal life, with various addictions and was eventually jailed for securities fraud in 1999.
With the nature of this kind of book, I'm not always sure whether there is or isn't an embellishment, but in a way this doesn't impede on the enjoyment.

I read this is a potential next movie for Scorcese...

Isis Gallery

March 22, 2008

JohnIsis.jpg

I went to visit Isis Gallery this week, tucked away behind Tottenham Court Road, and had a fun meeting with John Marchant. Assistant to Nan Goldin for many years, John looks after some artists, many of which have slightly dark or unsettling edge.
He is pictured here in front of a favourite picture rescued from the wall of famous NYC club Nell's by Goldin. The Isis Galley website is coming soon...

Bath Time

RomanBath1.jpg

The Roman city of Bath is a very beautiful place and the only location in the UK to have Hot Springs.
These photos are of the famous Roman Baths, set up approximately 1950 years ago - around 60-70 AD.

RomanBath3.jpg

The baths were open to the public up until 1979, when a girl swallowed some of the source water, and died five days later. The pool was closed for swimming.

BathSpa1.jpg

This is the Thermae Bath Spa, opened in 2006 and a great contrast to the Roman Baths. Everyone that has visited this Spa recommends it, so I was looking forward to checking it out.

BathSpa2.jpg

There are a lot of Georgian buildings in Bath, and this project works around the original building to combines new and old spa facilities (hot baths, steam rooms, open-air pool), arranged from the basement to the roof.

BathSpa6.jpg

BathSpa3.jpg

The water for the hot baths and outdoor pool comes from the same thermal hot-springs that have been used for centuries (but different boreholes).

BathSpa5.jpg

The weather this weekend was very rainy, so it was a strange sensation to be outdoors in the cold and rain, but warm in the pool. This place is quite unique for the UK, and I look forward to coming again in the summer.

Haring House

March 13, 2008

HaringHouse1.jpg

The American Thread Building in Manhattan is on the market, with an unusual detail -

HaringHouse2.jpg

an original Keith Haring artwork from 1979 remains painted on the wall, hidden near the entrance on the first floor.
The artwork was discovered when the developers came in, and couldn't be removed.
So, although the work could be worth approximately $1m, it adds very little value to the house.
Anyway, this would be very nice to come home to.

Wasn't there another graffiti wall found in a NY apartment last year?

Couverture & The Garbstore

March 10, 2008

Garbstore.jpg

A new store just opened in West London - 'Couverture & The Garbstore'.
It's a modern 3-level shop expanding on the Kings Road clothing and homeware shop Couverture, with the basement given to mens clothing - the UK clothing brand Garbstore and other select brands.
Greg is pictured here recommending his favourite item.

Gormley

March 07, 2008

Gormley1.jpg

New Antony Gormley show opened today at The White Cube Mason's Yard.
No photos inside, so the picture on the postcard features a close-up of the main work, 'Firmament'.
On the street level gallery there are 32 cast figures which the viewer can wander around. All are standing, but some are on the ceiling, some on the walls and some on the floor.

Downstairs, 'Firmament' is a giant sculpture somewhat like a drawing or a matrix that the viewer can walk under, past and through and is able to see all joins and angles.

It feels like there are a lot of Gormley works around the UK now, in all different places. I wonder if his work is popular overseas too.

Julian Schnabel

March 05, 2008

I've been interested in two Julian Schnabel works recently.
Firstly, I went to see the movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly the other evening.
This is a true story about ex-French Elle editor, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who suffers a stroke and is left paralysed with the rare 'locked-in' syndrome. This leaves him able to operate his left eye and eyelid only, and through this he develops a way of communicating. There are moments of despair and moments of great beauty in the film, and most of the audience remained sitting in silence until the end of the credits.

DivingBell1.jpg

The other project I have been following is the Palazzo Chupi building.

PalazzoChupi1.jpg

Described as 'Pompeii Red', and having received very mixed reviews, this is a very unusual looking site in the West Village, N.Y.
Recent photos from Vanity Fair show the interior and an interesting looking swimming-pool.
I look forward to my next visit to Manhattan so I can see the building in person.

Can You Help J. Simons?

March 03, 2008

JSimons.jpg

The lease at 2 Russell Street expires in June 2009. Unless there is a change of circumstances then closure of our shop may well be looming at that time. As things currently stand it will be uneconomical for us to continue past that date. We believe that
J. Simons is a wonderful shop and it is a name with a great reputation and a history that stretches right back to the immediate post-war era. There are few, if any, that can touch us for our genuine connections to the roots of post-war male fashion in the UK. For these reasons and more we believe it would be somewhat tragic for this small but hugely significant shop to disappear. If anybody reading this who knows the shop and what it means and who has ideas as to where we can take this then John Simons would welcome hearing from you. Our main needs are primarily financial. This is not an invitation for sympathy, but a desire to connect with any potential investors there may be out there. John can be contacted on 020 7379 7353 or via the email address on the home page.

In the meantime, for the next 14 months it's business as usual. We hope to post up details here soon of our new Summer 08 range.

Thanks to all,

The staff at J.Simons
