During my recent Cali trip, I was invited by Oakley to visit their headquarters in Foothill Ranch. This was one of the most inspiring company visits I've experienced since my first time to Beaverton, Oregon. The brand ethos is so strong at Oakley. It's a rarity in today's corporate America. The company is based on a solid foundation of design, performance and protection. That's it. Did you know that almost every single pair of optics that Oakley sells comes from this single office in Cali? From concept to design to sampling to production to shipping to distribution—it all comes out of this ONE SINGLE office. Why? Why are they not outsourcing like every other company in America (including Staple)? Because they have OCD and analness to the Nth degree. It was really amazing to see. I can't make a t-shirt under one roof and these guys are making hardware items that withstand projectiles.
先日のカルフォルニアの旅の途中で、僕はOakleyに招待されFoothill Ranchにある本部を訪ねてきました。今回は僕が経験した中でBeaverton, Oregonに初めて訪れて以来、一番感銘を受けた会社訪問でした。Oakleyのブランドの気風はとても強いものでした。今日のコーポレートアメリカには珍しいものです。この会社はデザイン、パフォーマンスとプロテクションのしっかりとした基盤に基づいています。それだけです。Oakleyで販売されているほとんどのアイウェアはカルフォルニアにあるたった一つのオフィスから生まれる事を知っていますか？コンセプトからデザインからサンプリングから生産から出荷から卸まで、これら全部をたった一つのオフィスでやっています。なぜ？なぜ他のアメリカの企業のように（Staple含め）アウトソーシングをしないのか？なぜなら、彼らは病気なくらい神経質で几帳面。すごかったです。僕は一つの屋根の下で一枚のTシャツも作れないのに彼らは弾丸にも耐えられるハードウェアアイテムを作っているなんて。

Did you know Oakley's founder, Jim Jannard, started out making handlebar grips for motorbikes? He named his company after his dog. He manged to develop a rubber grip that got stickier when wet rather than more slippery. It became the industry standard. Unfortunately, its difficult to brand your logo on handlebar grips. So he decided to try making goggles where the strap was prime real estate for branding. Necessity is the mother of invention again. Jim, still part of Oakley, went on to start a new company. Red Camera—which is now the industry standard Under-10lb HD camera. You could say this guy knows something about lenses.
Oakleyの創設者、Jim Jannardはバイクにつけるハンドルグリップを作り出したのが始まりだった事を知っていますか？社名は彼の愛犬の名前から付けられました。彼は濡れたときに滑らずもっと吸着するゴム製のハンドルグリップを開発しました。それが今では業界のスタンダード。しかし、ハンドルブリップに会社のロゴを入れるのは大変なので、ストラップがブランディングに最適なゴーグルを作るようになりました。またまた、需要は発明の母です。Jimは今でもOakleyの一員ですが新しい会社を設立しました。Red Cameraという今では業界の10ボンド以下のHDカメラを製造しています。レンズについてはこの人にまかせてください。

Nice goodies. Top one is a one-off prototype design...never to be made. It features the Tokyo Subway System all over it. The second one is a mil-spec Oakley goggle. No graphics at all and totally matte black. Can't wait till next winter.
ナイス。上のは一度限りのプロトタイプデザイン。。。二度と作られません。東京の地下鉄網がデザインされています。二番目のはmil-spec Oakleyゴーグル。グラフィック無しのマットな真っ黒。次の冬が待ちどおしい。

Cali is a state of extremes. One minute you're flying over snow capped mountains. 30 minutes later, you're landing in Long Beach Airport in 75° weather. The great food is also an example.
カルフォルニアはいろいろな両極端が共存する州です。雪山の上を飛んでいると思いきや、30分後には24度のロングビーチ空港に着陸します。食べ物もいい例。
California is synonymous with In-n-Out Burger. (Why can't they bring this to New York!?) I love their Protein Style Burger...which is a beef patty wrapped in lettuce rather than a bun. It's so good and you don't get that bloated feeling afterwards. But what I am about to say may be blasphemy to many: I tried the same protein style burger at Carl's Jr...AND IT'S BETTER.
カルフォルニアといえばIn-n-Out Burgerです。（何でニューヨークにないのかな？）ここのプロテインスタイルバーガーが大好き。。。バンズの代わりにお肉がレタスで包まれています。すごくおいしくて、食べた後にはおなかが膨れない。でもこれから言う事はたくさんの人にとっては冒涜にあたいしますが：同じプロテインスタイルバーガーをCarl's Jrでも食べましたが。。。さらにおいしかったです。
When you've filled up on burgers and criss-cross fries, I highly suggest the Hotel Bel Air in Beverly Hills. They serve the best crab cakes I have ever tasted in my life. Thanks to Marisa and Maurizio for the introduction...
OK, OK...now that I've opened up the debate, who makes the best fast food burger in the land? Small restaurant burgers are not included in this discussion. This debate is strictly for the mass produced variety.
