Some in the media, even today, look back on MJ's stint as a baseball player as a mistake, a failed experiment, a bust. Those who view it in those terms, choosing to measure the success or failure of that experience through statistics alone, are entirely missing the point. Consider, MJ had completed his Three-Peat, had accomplished all he'd set out to accomplish in his chosen profession, and was in dire need of a long rest. The phrase "for the love of the game" has been somewhat overwrought and overused by now, but it couldn't have been more accurate a description of how MJ had once again fallen in love with playing a game.
