So I wake up this morning to find the brand new Sony Blu-Ray disc player waiting at my door. For those who don't know, Blu-Ray is like a DVD but with greater storage capacity, making it capable of showing 1080p HD video. ("I totally don't that means, but I want it.") For the last two years there has been a shoot-out between Blu-Ray and it's rival HD disc, the HD-DVD. It's still undecided which media will emerge the victor (Hello, Beta!!!) but my vote has been with Blu-Ray. I'm with it on the name alone. Sounds toxic.
Sony needs this win in big way. Most every proprietary media the electronics giant has gotten involved in has tanked - Mini Disc, CD-Extra, the Network Walkman, DUAL DISC, Sony Connect, UMD, DAT, the baby carrot reader, etc - but if they play their cards right, Sony could come out with their first big winner in many years. (Playstation doesn't count. It plays DVDs.)
I was giddy when I opened the box and lifted the stunning looking player from it's styrofoam womb. Even the remote control is a sight to behold. With "The Fifth Element" pre-packaged, this seemed like it was going to be an out-of-the-box thrill. Oh, I forgot to mention that I just set up the brand new Sony Bravia HD TV last night, so these two pieces of gear were going to get along quite nicely.
Okay. Here's where you scratch the needle off the record.
There is no supplied HDMI cable with this unit. Let me break that down for you. The cable that sends all that powerhouse image and sound information? It's not included in the box. What is? Those old RCA cables you used to hook up VCRs since the 19 farking 80s. 1000.00 USD buys you a player but no cable to supply the very features the unit is BASED upon. I'll spare you the analogies.
Big high five to Sony Electronics for their infinite wisdom; if the first ten seconds of owning this machine is any indication of its life span, this thing should make it 'til about next May.
