(Points to self, looks left and right)"Me?"

February 28, 2007

Just got this e-mail. Some may call it "spam", but I call it funny as hell.
From Mr. Norgan Rogers. Today is my lucky day! First, I sell out MSG and now this!!!

The Auditor/Head
of Computing Department
Bank of Scotland,
United Kingdom.
Dear Friend,
In order to transfer out £52,000,000.00 (Fifty Two Million Pounds Sterling) from our bank here, I have the courage to look for a reliable and honest person who will be capable for this important transaction, believing that you willnever let me down either now or in future.I am the auditor and head of computing department of a bank here in Scotland,United Kingdom. There is an account opened in this bank in 1995 and since my inception into office in 2001,nobody has operated on this account again, after going through some old files,I discovered that if i do not remit this money out urgently, it will be forfeited for nothing.
I know that this message will come to you as a surprise as we have never met. But be sure that this transaction is real and genuine too. I will use my position and influence on other staffs to effect the legal approvals and onward transfer of this money to your account with appropriate clearance from the foreign payment department. With assurance that this money will be intact pending my physical arrival in your country for the sharing and possible investments. Please reply immediately.
Thanks,
Sincerely yours,
Mr.Norgan Rogers

The Droste Effect

Big ups to Edison's big ups...

hb2.27.1.jpg

Which makes me think of...

THE DROSTE EFFECT:
"The Droste effect is a Dutch term for a specific kind of recursive picture. A picture exhibiting the Droste effect depicts a smaller version of itself in a place where a similar picture would realistically be expected to appear. This smaller version then depicts an even smaller version of itself in the same place, and so on. Technically this can go on forever, but practically it continues as long as the resolution of the picture allows, which is relatively short since each iteration exponentially reduces the picture's size.
The term Droste effect was coined by the poet and columnist Nico Scheepmaker, at end of the 1970s. It is named after Droste, a Dutch brand of hot chocolate, whose box has a picture of a nurse carrying a serving tray with a cup and a box of the same brand of hot chocolate."

"An example of the Droste effect can be easily created by placing two mirrors in front of each other. Another method would be to film one's own television with a video camera, while displaying the output of the video camera on the same television."

Calluses

February 23, 2007

I remember when I first started playing guitar, all the kids who played would compare calluses... You weren't much if you didn't have them, and the thicker the strings you used, the cooler you were. I never really stuck my head in the game all that much, though I was using pretty thick strings. I've taken it down a bit in my post-adolescent play-every-night situation... Lately I've been tearing my fingers up again because the crowds keep pushing me to play as hard as I possibly can. (Peer pressure...) I've been digging Derek Trucks a lot lately and try to forget my guitar has frets, but once I get off stage - I remember again. With every painful keystroke I make...

Rick Nielson's 1963 Guild Merle Travis Model

February 21, 2007

1 of only 3 in the world... Didn't even attempt to guess the value... I would say "they don't make 'em like that anymore", but they didn't even make 'em like that back then... It's got a "kitchen sink, too" design mentality, but somehow maintains its cool...

Two-Rock JM Signature coming very soon... Ships with supplied Calzone case stenciled exactly like mine are... Keeps with the "ready to tour" aspect of the instruments I help design. This amp ain't just for your living room... 1-25 will be blue, with a couple of "single red" prototypes for the "design team".

The Grammy Envelope...
hb2.16.3.jpg

When they called my name, I had just finished playing in front of many millions of people... hadn't put my head on straight. Only mentioned the folks that I would have died had I not thanked... So many others though...

hb2.16.4.jpg

The honor is amazing...arresting...hard to speak for a while after, but they make you anyway...

hb2.16.5.jpg

Almost as delicious as the real thing...
Music has been good to me. I'm proud and self conscious and thankful...

Wait til you hear the next CD... I think I'll expose the plan here very soon.

Thank You Kiefer

February 12, 2007

Gibson's just released a guitar designed/inspired by Kiefer Sutherland, the KS 336.
A couple of years ago I gave Kiefer one of my Martin signature models, and he recently returned the gesture by giving me number 003...

There's NO feeling like getting a guitar as a gift. It's such a thrill. Especially when it plays and sounds this great... Look for it on stage soon...

The brand new Panerai PAM0249, reissue of the "California Dial" from 1936... Notice my favorite serial number. No, not a freebie... but being able to know you'll have the line on an in-demand watch, not to mention getting the first in the US... is cool...

Cell Phone Photography

February 04, 2007

I've always associated cell phone pictures with impossibly high expectations for quality, and by way of that, total obnoxiousness on the part of the user - not intended, but the accidental result of new technology desperately in need of some corresponding digital etiquette.

Then my good friend Sam Erickson wrote me the other day:

"Hey John: Since you are such a devotee of high end digital photography I decided to share with you a decidedly low tech form of digital photography that I have been working with over the last couple of years. That is cell phone photography. Most of these photos were taken while driving though a few are from taxi or train windows and one or two taken on foot. I love the casual off-handed feel of these pictures when compared with some of the more technically laborious kinds of photography I am obligated to master in my profession. These pictures were emailed to myself and then run through I-photo."

I think this is an interesting new direction - seeing what kind of emotional resonance you can get out of a lens the size of a tick - and it takes a great photographer to do that... Which Sam happens to be. You and I on the other hand are still taking pictures of our bowl-winders and stuff on our cat.
