Ford GT Road Test

February 29, 2008

The Gumball 3000 Rally takes place in August, and I'm already setting my mind on the logistics. Two men, one car, 3000 miles, and a party every night to up the stakes. There's got to be a way to do it safely and without going insane. The first order of business? Picking the right car. Sure, we could track down a Rolls Phantom or a Bentley, and I can understand why some would, but the spirit of this rally is about endurance.

With that, the great Lorenzo Colberti and I took a late night drive from Los Angeles to Palm Springs. The purpose was to test the Ford GT for use in the rally. The result? We're taking it.

Full Flora
The GT isn't a luxury ride. It's got no traction control, no GPS, no clock, not even so much as a glove compartment. It's a race car. All it does is go. And it goes unlike any car on the road.

The Office
Believe it or not, the seats are remarkably comfortable. There's only about 4 inches of clearance between my head and the roof, but if I don't look up, it actually feels cozy.

I'll let this picture speak for itself.

Satellite Phone
We'll need this on the North Korea -> China run. People think it's a little strange, but I've owned a sat phone for several months now. In the event that something out of the ordinary happens and cell towers get overloaded, you'll want one of these. Works everywhere ON EARTH.

The ultimate zen challenge.

What Back Seat?
Something spiritually significant about having the heart of the machine at your back... We're going to have to use headsets to talk to one another. Engine and wind noise make talking difficult without straining the voice over time.

Macintosh
There's no better stereo system than a Macintosh, but this one needs an iPod input jack.

I had to do it for Honeyee.

More Gumball/GT posts to come...
