Hello Tokyo and beyond August 10, 2006
かなり以前から藤原ヒロシにHoneyeeに参加するよう誘われていて、ステイプル デザインのジェフ にも色々と細かく手ほどきしてもらったけど、実際に開始するまで随分長い時間がかかってしまった。
エクゼクティブ クリエイティブ ディレクターとしてワイデン＋ケネディ東京をオープンするために東京に６年間すんでいました。最近は上海支店もオープンしたばかり。今はポートランド本社にもどってきてるけど、いまだに日本と上海に必ず毎月一度は行き来しているよ。次は北京に支店をオープンする予定。 While I will continue to work around the world, especially in the cities of our other offices, NYC, London, Amsterdam but Tokyo remains close to my heart. A place where I find so much inspiration from my friends and the culture. For this reason, I value my continued work with my associates on W+K Tokyo Lab, the independent DVD music label as well as the Wieden+Kennedy office. ニューヨーク、ロンドン、アムステルダムとグローバルに支店があるので、いつも世界中を走り回っているよ。その中でも東京は今だに僕の一番の好きな場所。友人からの数々のインスピレーションとカルチャーが東京には沢山あるからね。だから今だにW＋K Tokyo Lab, インデペンデント ミュージック レーベールの仕事や東京の仕事からは完全に離れられないでいるんだ。 W+K Tokyo Lab continues to make news around the world. Takagi Masakatsu, the multi-talented artist of W+K Tokyo Lab is currently featured by Apple on their Apple Pro site and Hifana recently appeared in the Sonar Music Festival in Barcelona.
アメリカにもどってきて今一番興味深い事は、ポートランドがアメリカ内でも現在今すごく注目されるシティになっているということ。クオリティー高い生活感とインディー クリエイティブ カルチャー精神が若いブランド、フィルムメーカー、アーティストやデザイナーに受け入れられるようになったんだろうね。
ちょうど先週の木曜日、に８月４日ポートランドのチャイナタウン街でアッパーグラウンドのオープニングがあったんだ。世界的にも今注目を浴びている中目黒の KAMIやSASUがショーに参加していた。ちなみにKAMIの作品、警察官立寄所の看板を購入。以前彼とSASU、共にナイキのプレストの仕事を一緒にやったことがあって、彼が住んでいた近所を訪れたウィーケンドを思い出させてくれた。
The corner of Fifth and Couch St. in Portland has become a very interesting scene with Upper Playground, Just Be Complex and a new Portland Art Center on each corner. I have also recently opened a personal creative studio away from my Wieden+Kennedy office and home called Studio J. Studio J is also on the corner of Fifth and Couch Streets and sits on the second floor overlooking Chinatown, on top of Upper Playground's new shop and gallery. I have 2 walls of windows which allows me to look right into Katsu Tanaka's Just Be shop which was just listed in Dime Magazine in the Top 25 sneaker spots in the U.S. ちょうど５番アベニューとクーチ通りがぶつかるあたりが今、ポートランドでもかなり話題な場所になってきていて、アッパーグラウンド、、ジャストビーコンプレックス、ポートランドアートセンターが一挙立ち並んでいる。ワイデン＋ケネディーとは別に最近スタジオJっていうパーソナル クリエイティブスペースを設けたんだけども、５番アベニューとクーチ通り、アッパーグラウンドの丁度真上2階にあって、チャイナタウン全体を見渡せるんだ。２角のウィンドーからはダイムマガジンでスニーカーショップ２５のリストにも選ばれたカツタナカのジャストビーショップが見えるしね。
The first Thursday of each month is called "First Thursday" in the Pearl District where Wieden+Kennedy offices sit amongst many art galleries and shops. This monthly event brings many people to the streets visitng the The energy of "First Thursday" has now spilled over to the neighboring Chinatown area. The activities this past Thursday created huge impact in the neighborhood. Just Be flew in artists from the Osaka art collective, Digmeout. Their art team, Doppel painted a mural on the street in front of the Just Be façade all to the beat of some great music. Just Be's gallery, Compound was packed with visitors. ファーストサーズディ(第一木曜日）っていうイベントがワイデン＋ケネディ、数々のアートギャラリー、ショップが立ち並んでいるパール街で毎月あるんだ。このイベントのおかげで、町中にかなりの人々がにぎわい出てくる。最近はチャイナタウン街にもその影響がきてるんだ。今回のイベントではジャストビーがわざわざ大阪のディグミーアウトというコレクティブ アーティスト集団を大阪から招待したり、そのチームメンバーのドッペルがショップの前の壁にライブでペインティングしたり、ビート感いっぱいの音楽をがんがん流すわで、ジャストビーは大盛況。ものすごいインパクトを与えたことになった。
Upper Playground's gallery, Fifty24 PDX Gallery opened next door to the apparel shop with artists including Ricky Powell w/ Phil Frost, Jeremy Fish and many other young discoveries. They also created murals all over Portland during this weekend and had book signings with Jeremy Fish and Aesop Rock the MC. アッパーグラウンドギャラリー、フィフティ２４PDXギャラリーはアパレルショップの隣にある。リッキー パウエル、フィルフォーレスト、ジャーミーフィッシュ等、他多数の若いアーティストを発掘しているんだ。彼らもポートランド中の壁画アートに参加したり、ジャーミーフィッシュとMCのエーソップロックのサイン会などをしていた。 Across the street, an old friend from Tokyo, Matt Houston who once had a gallery and apparel brand in Harajuku and later moved to Portland to be a designer for Nike, had a show of his conceptual art in the new Portland Art Center. スタジオの真向かい側には東京時代からの長年の友人、原宿にアパレルブランドとギャラリーを所有していたあのマットヒューストンがナイキのデザイナーとしてポートランドに最近引っ越して来たんだ。、ポートランドアートセンターでは彼のコンセプシャルなショーがあって、彼のアーティストとしての素晴らしい変化を目にすることができた。
Studio J opened its doors quietly to personal friends from the neighborhood or those coming to Chinatown to see the shows. It was great to have the Digmeout artists, Doppel come up after their live painting event, along with Studio Voice Magazine. Studio J will host salons by invitation for interesting and creative people. There will be a range of eclectic projects coming out of Studio J. The first is an architectural project in Portland. It is a private residence designed by Brad Cloephil, America's influential young architect who also did Wieden+Kennedy's offices in Portland. This residence will eventually be for sale when completed. I love archtiecture so hopefully I can develop more projects in the future. Currently also working on a product development project as well as a book concept. Hopefully, I can finally now start my project with Hiroshi Fuijiwara that we have been talking about for so long. スタジオJはパーソナルな友達はもちろん、チャイナタウンにギャラリーを訪れてくる隣人達にも常にオープンな場所なんだ。ディグミーアート集団の、一員、ドッペルがきてライブ ペインティングをしたのは本当に面白かった。スタジオボイスも同行してきていたよ。このスタジオJは常にクリエイティブ達のためのサロンのホスト的な存在でありたい。これからも広範囲に多様なプロジェクトに関わっていく予定。最初のプロジェクトはポートランド建築企画で、ワイデン＋ケネディポートランドオフィスをデザインした事で今アメリカで最も注目されている若手建築家となったブラットコーフィル、と一緒にプライベード住宅を設計している。完成次第、実際にマーケットに売り出される予定。
実は今、多様なフィールドの影響者達を招いたサロンを起こそうとNylonマガジン、他多数の人々と色々アイデアをだしあっているんだところなんだ。僕がボードアドバイザーとして参加しているThemeマガジンでは新しいクリエイティブ達がどんな風にポートランド、チャイナ街に新風を起こしているのか、たった今ページを書きあげたところ。沢山のアーティストが訪れている中、きっと面白いイベントになると思うよ。今日はアッパープレイグラウンドのパートーナー／創立者が彼のチームと一緒にスタジオに遊びにきた。スタジオJでのクリエイティブワークはワイデン＋ケネディと全く関係ないけれども、友人同士のネットワークは常に共有しあっているんだ。

JOHN C. JAY
John C Jay is Executive Creative Director and Partner of Wieden + Kennedy and lives in Portland Oregon. Jay oversees with Dan Wieden, the global creative work from WK offices in Portland, NYC, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Shanghai.
He opened the W+K offices in Tokyo (lived in Japan for 6 years) and Shanghai and works in those offices every month. Jay is also founder and Co-Creative Director for W+K Tokyo Lab, the independent music label. He recently opened Studio J in Portland's Chinatown, his independent creative studio. At Ohio State University, he funded the Jay Scholarship which was started to encourage students of Asian descent to study and plan a career in the Arts. Previous to W+K, he served as Creative Director and Marketing Director in fashion/lifestyle for Bloomingdale's in NYC for 13 years.
