Dear friends:

Thank you for your response to my opening blog. My apologies for taking so long to update. Both Hiroshi Fuijiwara and Jeff Staple, among others, got on my case for not updating sooner. Despite my understanding that Honeyee was a very popular and much watched site, I was really flattered by people from all over the globe who acknowledged reading my blog. It was a wonderful surprise to me. When I stopped by all of my favorite shops in Tokyo, many of the sales people approached me about it. So, I will try to update my information more often. I appreciate your kindness and comments.

Shanghai Glows

This city is full of surprises, the contrasts of good and bad, old and new, rich and poor, controlled and free…helps to make Shanghai a dynamic city. People come and try to compare it with other mega-cities such as New York, London, Singapore or Tokyo. That is a mistake, don't apply your conditions to this crazy experiment called China.

The truth is that China of today defies such traditional boxes of description or expectations. It will never cease to surprise you.

The above photo is an example of such surprises. The Liuli Gongfang Museum softly glows amidst the harsh commercial lights of the city. It is a museum by day and lounge by night (but open only till 1 a.m.) which features contemporary glass art and 20 years of accumulated works for Loretta Hui-Shan Yang. The entire glass façade, rather than the contents is perhaps its best example of the art form. The private booth next to the huge red bar is a great place for some champagne.

W+K Shanghai

Each month when I arrive to the office to work, I am struck by the energy of the young Chinese. Like the Wieden + Kennedy office in Tokyo, it is rapidly becoming an international meeting place for interesting people. Recently at a barbeque in our garden for Starbucks, an entrepreneur friend from New York City showed up unexpectedly and said, "we heard about the party and that you were in town, so we decided to crash it". W+K Shanghai has become a place to "crash".

London Police and Faile

Visiting artists such as the London Police from Amsterdam and Faile from brooklyn N.Y are given space to leave their "tag" at W+K Shanghai.
The ability to meet and engage in a dialogue with influential creative people who live and operate outside of the mainstream creative world often prove to be much more interesting than the so called "professionals".

Beijing Style

This character called "I" was originally created by Beijing artist, WZL in collaboration with our good friend, Eddi Yip and "da Space", the influential gallery in Shanghai for a global summit of Wieden + Kennedy creative and managing directors. Each person attending the recent conference received the custom figure with his or her first name in Chinese on the front. W+K Shanghai designer, Dong Wei reinterpreted the design and created the packaging.
We are constantly meeting new young artists in China such as WZL, it is one of the exciting parts of our job. Like our Tokyo office, W+K Shanghai's goal is to support young creative people in China by giving them exposure, connections and inspiration from around the world. It is important to be an enabler, to offer people our help without any concern about money or favors in return so that the emphasis remains on inspiration, collaboration and the authenticity of their art.

Re-inventing Ourselves

This is a new book, "Reinventing Music Video" that was just published by Focal Press in the U.S. I love the title because it represents so much about our philosophy at Wieden + Kennedy on so many things.

There is a 14 page section inside the book featuring, +cruz, our Executive Art Director and often director of the music videos by W+K Tokyo Lab, our independent music label. Our W+K Tokyo Lab work is featured in many international film/video festivals and it represents our attempt to challenge both ourselves and the status quo of the music industry.

It is also just one small aspect of very exciting ongoing discussions we are having in Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Portland and many other W+K offices about the re-invention of what we actually do as an agency. Each month, the calendar is filled on my monthly trips with meetings with some of the brightest new minds and entrepreneurs in new media. Wieden + Kennedy in Portland has been energized by these discussions on where media is going in the future beyond some of the more obvious examples. The list of visitors and advisors in Portland has been really exciting.

Discussions with amazing media technologists in China for example is imperative as we continue our quest to be a "creative content company" and not just another agency. Like our Tokyo office, W+K Shanghai opened on day 1 with the idea of being very different from the status quo. Since W+K Tokyo Lab was used as a part of the launch of i-tunes in Japan, our ideas and learning about the next wave of digital music platforms will take us to new places.

Every meeting is huge learning experience for me and it is exciting to see each office evolve creatively.

Peace.

John
