Private Time Memory Lane Classic Cars I wanted to congratulate Jeff of Staple Design of the launch of his new Reed Sapce In Aoyama. I couldn't make it to Tokyo so Akio Iida of Wieden + Kennedy Tokyo was kind enough to video the event for me. It looks amazing. Don't forget that W+K Tokyo Lab's Hifana plays in Central Park in New York on Sept. 30th. Look for my next blog which will share a few more of my secret "uncool" places. Creative living in Amsterdam September 13, 2006
As I look down through my window upon the canal outside of the apartment where I was staying, you can see the boats liesurely go by as the light passes over with even slower speed. The pace of life is so different from Tokyo and Shanghai, at least on the surface. However, when inside any creative company such as Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam or Droog Design, you can feel the international pace as young people converse in so many languages and collaborate with so many interesting artistic talents around the world. Amsterdam remains one of the unique cities of the world, one where design can truly be inspirational and speak with a human voice…just like the city.
I had the great pleasure of visiting one of my design heroes, Renny Ramakers of Droog Design. One of the remarkable traits of Droog is their sense of openness, social commentary through wit and design. So often, design is placed upon an altar to be worshipped. Droog is the opposite, it is absolutely smart without the pretense, intellectually driven but easy going like your best friend. Its collaborative sprit is inspiring when so much of design tries to be self-important. Founded in 1993 by Renny Ramakers and Gijis Bakker, Droog Design is a collaboration between a group of designers in Holland. The offices are housed in a charming building from 1641 which features an open space on the ground floor and garden. The storefront has an exhibition space and shop but also serves as a place to have large casual dinners with creative people from around the world.
Renny Ramakers showed me around the purposely unrenovated offices which are filled with thrift furniture and each room painted in a dynamic color. Her office is all green with different shades making it feel like a minimalist painting with soul and individuality. There is a quote from Renny from an interview I read which is a challenge to all young creatives today. "Recycling ideas, concepts, shapes, products, materials and typologies has nothing to do with the lack of originality. On the contrary, it all depends on how you re-use existing things. A lot of today's recycling practice is not original at all." I like her challenge, that re-mixing alone is not creative. Ideas still count.
Hifana from the Wieden + Kennedy music label is making its first appearance in New York City. The New York - Tokyo Music Festival on Sept. 30, 2006 will feature Talib Kweli, DJ A-TRAK representing the U.S. and Pe'z, Mighty Crown and Hifana playing for Japan. This musical exchange will happen in Rumsey Field in Central Park. W+K Tokyo will be filming the Hifana performance for their upcoming "live" DVD. Please join us in Central Park…it should be fun. Tokyo Style This is a picture of some of our beautiful staff in W+K Tokyo taken on our terrace in Roppongi just before the office all walked to Azubu Juban for the opening night of Obon holidays. Having fun at W+K Tokyo Come to our front window at Wieden + Kennedy Tokyo and you will notice that there is no sign with our name on it. But everyone knows it is us when they see the collection of skateboards used by our staff as well as the big remote control cars that they use to roam the neighborhood! In America, there is a saying, "if it feels like work, then it's not working.!"
Each year, the Ohio Sate University's College of the Arts awards funds from the Gim and Jan Jay Scholarship to an outstanding student. This year's recipient is Nikki San Miguel, who is a 3rd year student in Visual Communication Design. Nikki is an honor student with a keen sense of design who has lived in the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. Born in the Philippines, she is fluent in Tagalog, the main language of the country. I started the Jay Scholarship to encourage young students of Asian descent to consider a study or career in a creative filed. Each year, I am encouraged by the students who are selected by the university. Now that I have moved back to the U.S., it will be easier for me to personally help each student such as Nikki in her pursuit of an interesting creative career path. I want to congratulate Jeff Staple on the opening of his new shop and gallery in Tokyo. It's great to see a fellow New Yorker, do so well as a creative spirit and an inspiration to other young people. Hope to see my friends in Tokyo soon. John C Jay China on my mind September 05, 2006
This city is full of surprises, the contrasts of good and bad, old and new, rich and poor, controlled and free…helps to make Shanghai a dynamic city. People come and try to compare it with other mega-cities such as New York, London, Singapore or Tokyo. That is a mistake, don't apply your conditions to this crazy experiment called China. The truth is that China of today defies such traditional boxes of description or expectations. It will never cease to surprise you. The above photo is an example of such surprises. The Liuli Gongfang Museum softly glows amidst the harsh commercial lights of the city. It is a museum by day and lounge by night (but open only till 1 a.m.) which features contemporary glass art and 20 years of accumulated works for Loretta Hui-Shan Yang. The entire glass façade, rather than the contents is perhaps its best example of the art form. The private booth next to the huge red bar is a great place for some champagne. Each month when I arrive to the office to work, I am struck by the energy of the young Chinese. Like the Wieden + Kennedy office in Tokyo, it is rapidly becoming an international meeting place for interesting people. Recently at a barbeque in our garden for Starbucks, an entrepreneur friend from New York City showed up unexpectedly and said, "we heard about the party and that you were in town, so we decided to crash it". W+K Shanghai has become a place to "crash".
Visiting artists such as the London Police from Amsterdam and Faile from brooklyn N.Y are given space to leave their "tag" at W+K Shanghai.
Beijing Style This character called "I" was originally created by Beijing artist, WZL in collaboration with our good friend, Eddi Yip and "da Space", the influential gallery in Shanghai for a global summit of Wieden + Kennedy creative and managing directors. Each person attending the recent conference received the custom figure with his or her first name in Chinese on the front. W+K Shanghai designer, Dong Wei reinterpreted the design and created the packaging.
Re-inventing Ourselves This is a new book, "Reinventing Music Video" that was just published by Focal Press in the U.S. I love the title because it represents so much about our philosophy at Wieden + Kennedy on so many things. There is a 14 page section inside the book featuring, +cruz, our Executive Art Director and often director of the music videos by W+K Tokyo Lab, our independent music label. Our W+K Tokyo Lab work is featured in many international film/video festivals and it represents our attempt to challenge both ourselves and the status quo of the music industry. It is also just one small aspect of very exciting ongoing discussions we are having in Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Portland and many other W+K offices about the re-invention of what we actually do as an agency. Each month, the calendar is filled on my monthly trips with meetings with some of the brightest new minds and entrepreneurs in new media. Wieden + Kennedy in Portland has been energized by these discussions on where media is going in the future beyond some of the more obvious examples. The list of visitors and advisors in Portland has been really exciting. Discussions with amazing media technologists in China for example is imperative as we continue our quest to be a "creative content company" and not just another agency. Like our Tokyo office, W+K Shanghai opened on day 1 with the idea of being very different from the status quo. Since W+K Tokyo Lab was used as a part of the launch of i-tunes in Japan, our ideas and learning about the next wave of digital music platforms will take us to new places. Every meeting is huge learning experience for me and it is exciting to see each office evolve creatively.
Peace. John |
