Private Time
I really enjoy reading the blogs on Honeyee. It is a lot of fun traveling with them and meeting such inspiring people through the lives of my fellow bloggers. I have had the great fortune to travel a great deal in my earlier fashion retail marketing career and now working in brand building with such great global clients like Nike since joining Wieden + Kennedy. It all seems so glamorous, and often times, it is. It certainly is never boring or slow. when I am home in Portland, away from the shiny lights of Shibuya, downtown Manhattan or the dynamic pace of Shanghai...if I have a couple of rare hours to myself, I go to my favorite secret places to get away from it all. Places that are far from being "cool" and reflect a simpler life in America.
プラベートな時間
ハニカムメンバー皆さんのページ、毎回楽しんで読んでます。ブログを通してみんなの毎日を見れたり、インスピレーションを与えてくれる沢山の人たちに出会ったりできるのは楽しい事だ。以前リテイルマーケティングの仕事をしていた頃に旅行する機会が沢山あった。現在ワイデン＋ケネディでは最高のグローバルクライアント、ナイキとブランディングの仕事をして飛び回っている。事実上、旅行ばかりしているから華やかな仕事をしているように見られることもあるようだ。(そんな時もありますが。)いつも飛び回って仕事ばかりしているけど、一度も退屈におもったり、スローに思った事はない。
渋谷やマンハッタンのきらびやかなイルミネーション、ダイナミックなペースの上海で過ごす時間とは正反対にポートランドにある自宅では僕には珍しく静かな数時間を過ごせることがある。そんな時間ができた時は、とある場所に出かける。僕の避難場所的な所で、全然トレンディーではないけど、シンプルなアメリカンライフを味わう事ができる。
Memory Lane Classic Cars
In a nondescript industrial area of southeast Portland on Holgate Rd, sits Matthew's Memory Lane, a simple garage that sells classic cars from different decades. My own interest is in Muscle Cars, classic American cars from the 60's and 70's with big engines and an even bigger sound. These were fast cars in a straight line racing from traffic light to traffic light.Going to Memory Lane is an escape for me, although they have a website which shows their latest acquisition for sale, I usually go alone and enjoy walking amongst the actual cars. These aren't the super cars of the rich (though some Muscle Cars are becoming very expensive), they do not have the pedigree of great Italian or English cars.These were the dream cars for the blue collar America 40 years ago. One day I will drive my 1970 Mach 1 Mustang there to surprise them.
メモリーレーン クラシック カーズ
地域がどこに当たるのか定かではないがポートランドの 南東、ホルゲートロードにある マシューズ メモリーレーンでは年代物のクラシックカーが売られている。アメ車のレースといえば、信号から次の信号へ真っすぐ直線上にに競って走りぬくのが基本だ。僕は特にマッスルカー、６０年代、７０年代のエンジンの大きい、音のうるさいクラシックなアメ車が好きである。。この場所に立ち寄る事は僕のちょっとした休息だ。もちろんウェブで最新コレクションを常時チェックできるけれど、実際に車を自分の目で見るのが好きである。これらのアメ車はお金持ちが乗りたがるようなスーパーカーではないし、（もちろん値段の高い種類もあるが）イタリア車や、イギリス車のように由緒ある車なわけでもない。４０年前、これらのアメ車はいわゆるアメリカ一般家庭のドリームカーだった。いつか１９７０年代の マッハ ムスタングで現れてメモリーレーンのオーナーを驚かそうと思う。
Dairy Queen Dreams
Home of the classic soft ice cream swirl in a cone, the place where my late Father once introduced me to another American classic, the root beer float. That was many years ago in Columbus Ohio. Today in Portland, this Dairy Queen sits on the corner of Milwaukee and 17th, between Memory Lane and the Sellwood antiques area. This Dairy Queen still has drive-through service, one of those unimportant things that I somehow missed living n Tokyo. It is inexpensive, lots of choices of ice cream related treats but far away from the upscale chicness of Hagen Daaz or trendiness of Cold Stone Creamery. There is no brand image, no sophisticated image, no cool people serving you...just old-school fun. Today, when I go, I treat myself to the perfect balance of a Coke float with vanilla ice cream.
デイリー クイーン ドリーム
ソフトクリームといえば、螺旋状のアイスがコーンの上にのっていてとてもクラシックな物である。あともう一つ、今は亡き父が教えてくれたルートビール フロートというアメリカでポピュラーな飲み物がある。ずっと昔、オハイオ州、コロンバスにすんでいた頃のことである。今日のポートランドにはデイリークイーンがミルウォーキーとセブンティーンスの角にあって、距メモリーレーン地区とシェルウッドのちょうど中間地点にある。ここにはドライブスルーがあって、重要ではないのだが
東京に住んでいる時に懐かしく思えた。そこでは安く、多種類のアイスクリームデザートが沢山のある。ハーゲンダッツとかコールドストーンとかかなりかけ離れて、ブランド性もないし、洗練されイメージもないし、クールな人が働いているわけでもないし、まさにオールドスクールなんだけど、そこが楽しい。
Studio J
I have had some really interesting guests visiting my studio in Portland's Chinatown, Studio J.Hiroshi Nakamura of N.A.P., the young talented architect in Tokyo stopped by. His design of the Lanvin shop in Ginza has caught a lot of attention through his innnovative use of materials. He was very interested in hearing about Wieden + Kennedy's involvement in social mission and how we have helped American-Indians for many years as well as our support of the arts in the local community. I'll have more to talk about soon in how I will use Studio J to help on social issues. I think it is our responsibiltity to use our leadership and good luck in life to give back in some important way.
スタジオ ジェイ
先日、スタジオに珍しいお客さんが訪れた。東京から若くして才能あふれる建築家、ヒロシ中村。彼の銀座にあるランヴィンショップはそのデザインと、ユニークな素材を使用している事でかなり有名だ。彼はワイデン＋ケネディの、ソーシャルミッション、アート、アメリカンインディアン ウェラサポートとロカール奉仕活動に興味を抱いていたそうだ。僕のスタジオはソーシャルミッションに深く関わっている。世の中に何か還元できる事、奉仕できる事はリーダーシップを持つ物としての責任である。次回はその事について書こうと思っている。
I wanted to congratulate Jeff of Staple Design of the launch of his new Reed Sapce In Aoyama. I couldn't make it to Tokyo so Akio Iida of Wieden + Kennedy Tokyo was kind enough to video the event for me. It looks amazing. Don't forget that W+K Tokyo Lab's Hifana plays in Central Park in New York on Sept. 30th. Look for my next blog which will share a few more of my secret "uncool" places.
ステイプル デザインのオーナー、ジャフステイプルが新しいショップ、リードスペースを青山にオープンした。残念な事にオープニングに駆けつけることはできなかったけど、東京のスタッフ、アキオ イイダがビデオで撮影して送ってくれた。素晴らしいオープニング、大盛況ふりをみせてもらったよ。ジェフ、おめでとう。
