The Inspiration of Art and Design November 06, 2007
I recently visited 2 schools that have influenced me and my career in my hometown of Columbus Ohio. I was invited to be a guest lecturer at the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) where I once attended Saturday morning art classes as a young student. I also spent time at my college alma-mater , The Ohio State University, where today I sponsor the Jay Scholarship.
Once a step-child to the much larger Ohio State University and it's College of the Arts, the CCAD has given many young aspiring creative talents a chance to find their creative voice. The new buildings house great work and study spaces for the students as well a very spacious gallery for exhibitions.
The students from the CCAD Advertising/Design Program came also to show their portfolios. One of the great privileges I have in my work is the ability to find and nurture top new talent. CCAD in Columbus is a breath of fresh air in the world of creative education. I travel all over the world seeking new creative talent, Wieden + Kennedy is always trying to contribute back to the creative community. However, nothing is as rewarding as working with young talent and students.
Under the direction of Sherri Geldin, The Wexner Center has risen to a position of prominence in contemporary art and ideas. On the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio, the center currently is featuring a brilliant exhibition by artist, William Wegman. The content is both surprising and engaging with Wegmans' iconic sense of wit evident in everything he has created from drawings, paintings to photographs.
Designed by Peter Eisenmen and Richard Trott, the center has been a provocative statement of architecture at this public university institution. The search for creative inspiration is a 24/7 assignment for me and the Wexner Center offered brilliant new inspiration.
Buckeye Fever The Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked no.1 in the country in football. Football here is a way of life rather than simply being a sport. I grew up as a boy attending their practices as well as games. Living just a few miles from the university so most of my love of sports came from my childhood experiences here. The Ohio State Athletic Department enjoys the largest budget in the country and coincidentally, my brother Ben Jay is the Associate Athletic Director at the university. I was invited by the marketing and creative department of the Athletics Department to give a talk and have a discussion on the challenges of modern sports marketing.
Unlearning Creativity Sir Ken Robinson gave a lecture on Ted Talk from the influential Ted Conference on how schools are killing innovation and creative thought. It is a provocative topic but universities and creative schools are not immune to the dangers of tradition and comfort.
