ちょうどオープンしたばかりのレンゾ・ピアノによるThe New York Times
Buildingへ。
The New York Times Building designed by Renzo Piano had just opened
while we were in NY.




予想以上に美しいビルで、ルーバーに文字が書かれているのディテールが面白かった。
It was far more beautiful than I expected. I especially liked the
detail of logo on the louvers.

最後にオープン直前のICE CREAM FLAGSHIP STOREで養生シートに書かれた注意書き。
かっこいい「ガラスに注意」。
Warning message on the curing sheet at my last destination, the site
of ICE CREAM FLAGSHIP STORE just before the opening. Cool! 'Glass Fragile'.

グラマシーパークホテルをチェックアウト。
Checked out the Gramercy Park Hotel.

特に最上階のテラスが肩の力が抜けていて気持ちよかった。
I liked the roof garden. An easy relaxing feeling.

フロアーにダミアン・ハーストのアートなどがさりげなく。。。
Here and there, some art pieces of Damien Hirst and others.....

２００８年も何度かくる事になりそうですが、ひとまずNYとお別れ。
I will most likely be coming back several times in 2008.

空港で、エーロ・サーリネンの名作、TWAターミナルビル。大好きです。
ドライバーにいつも回ってもらうコースです。
TWA terminal building at the airport, master piece of Aero Saarinen. I
love it. I usually ask driver to go by this terminal.

ブログ用にと張り切って写真をとっていたら、選ぶのに時間がかかってしまい
ました。こうやって旅の記録を書くのも面白いですね。ブログというよりは
日記っぽいですが。
I intentionally took many pictures for this blog, but it took me such
a long time to chose the photos.
I enjoyed writing this travel report. It felt like a diary rather than
a blog.

渡辺聡 Satoshi Watanabe "dim vistas"

先日、那須さんにお誘い頂いて食事に行ってきました。
主役は、Nasu Taro Galleryで個展を行っている渡辺聡さん。
僕も作品を購入させて頂いたのですが、すごくいい。
でも、言葉で説明するのは難しいので見に行ってください。
The other day, Mr. Nasu invited me to a dinner. It was in honor of
artist, Satoshi Watanabe, who is having an exhibition at Taro Nasu
Gallery. I have his art work, and I really like it.
It is hard to explain the presence of his work. You should see it.

真ん中が主役の渡辺さんです。
The one in the center is Mr. Watanabe, this evening's star.

仕事もかねて、ユニクロへ。
Checking out Uniqlo NY for work and fun.

グッゲンハイムで行われていたリチャード・プリンス展を見に行きました。
向こうからサングラスをしたロックな二人があるいてくると思ったら、
ヒステリックグラマーの北村さんと、スタイリストの野口さんでした。
すごい偶然でびっくり。
Visited the Richard Prince exhibition at the Guggenheim.
I saw two guys walking towards my direction. They looked like rock
musicians with sunglasses on.
It was Mr. Kitamura of Hysteric Glamour and Mr. Noguchi, stylist. What
a coincidence.

好きなマルセル・ブロイヤーによるホイットニー美術館に初めて来ました。
ロビーの照明がかわいかったです。地味だけど良い美術館でした。
My first visit to the Whitney Museum of American art, designed by one
of my favorit designers, Marcel Breuer.
I espcially liked the lighting design in the lobby, which I found
charming. Very low-key, but a nice museum.

この時はちょうどサンクスギビング。
現場も休み、お店も休み、開いているところはどこかと聞いたら
セントラルパークと自由の女神との回答が。
スタッフと一緒に、つかの間の休日を楽しみました。
It also coincided with the Thanksgiving holiday, so the site (of the
project I was working on) and most of stores were closed.
I asked the hotel concierge if there were any places I could visit,
They responded with recommendations of Central Park and the Statue of
Liberty. I enjoyed the spur of the moment trip with my staff.

Kiriko & Mayumi, sandwiched the Statue of Liberty. So typical.

ライティングデザイナーの安原さん。
今回は、現場でのライティングのため来てもらいました。
技術が素晴らしい人で、とても信用しています。
いつもありがとう。
Mr. Yasuhara, lighting designer, came with us to work at the site of a
project we're working on.
He has great technique and knowledge, and I really depend on him.
Thank you for your continuous cooperation.

ヨーロッパを出て、今度はNYへ。最後の目的地です。
Out of Europe to NY, the final destination of this trip.

僕の大好きな建築家、ミース・ヴァン・デル・ローエの手によるシーグラム
ビル。色気があるビルで、いつまでも古くならない。
Seagram Building, designed by Mies van der Rohe, one of my favorite
architects. This building has this glamorousness that has been able to withstand
the test of time.

このビルにある「THE FOUR SEASONS」でランチ。
ホテルではなく、こういう名前のレストランです。
スーツ姿の人が多い、エレガントなお店。
I had a lunch at THE FOUR SEASONS restaurant at Seagram Building.
An elegant restaurant with a lot of people wearing suits.

夜のMetLifeビル。元々はPan Amビルでした。
これも、NYを象徴するビルですよね。
この景色、とても好きです。
MetLife Buidling at night, formaly known as Pan Am Building.
This is also a symbol of NY. I love this scenery.

ちらっと、Four Seasons Hotelへ。
I stopped by Four Seasons Hotel.

ユニクロで一緒に仕事をしているマーカス、彼の右腕のベン、
そして僕のスタッフと総勢１０名近くでディナー。
ドイツ人のマーカスに、ベルリン事情をたくさん教えてもらっていたので、
ベルリンの事をたくさん話しました。
Markus and his right hand man, Ben. We work together on the Uniqlo
Project. We had a big dinner with them and my staff for about 10 people.
Markus, who is from Germany, gave me many information on Berlin, I
shared my experience there.

出張 #6/マーストレヒト・Business Trip #6/Maastricht

ベルリンを出発して、オランダのマーストレヒトに行きました。
穏やかできれいな街です。
Departing from Berlin, my next destination was Maastricht in The
Netherlands. A peaceful and beautiful town.

「THE GREAT INDOORS AWARD」に呼んで頂いて、ここにきました。
今年発足した、インテリアに特化した賞です。
イームズの家具でも有名なヴィトラ社の社長、ロルフ・フェルバウムさんが審
査委員長をつとめています。
I was invited by「THE GREAT INDOORS AWARD」.
This is a new award specific in interior design.
Mr. Rolf Fehlbaum, chairman of Vitra which is very known for their
production of Eames furniture, was the chairman of the international jury.

会場は、オランダ建築アカデミーでした。
The ceremony was held at NAi, Netherlands Architectural Institute.

5つのカテゴリーでそれぞれ受賞者が発表されました。
5 winners were announced in each category.

Show & Sell (Retail)
Relax & Consume (Leisure)
Concentrate & Collaborate (Work)
Serve & Facilitate (Public)
Interior Design Firm of the Year (open to architects and designers)

今回、僕は５つめの「インテリア・デザイン・ファーム・オブ・ザ・イヤー」
というカテゴリーでのノミネートです。次々と発表されていきました。
I was nominated for the 'Interior Design Firm of the Year' category.
One after another, the winners were announced.

そして。。。
And......

なんと、受賞。
実はワンダーウォールを設立してから、初めて賞というものを受賞しました。
ちょっとホッとしました。
I won the award.
This is the first award received since I established Wonderwall.
Frankly speaking, I was kind of relieved.

司会の人が会社名を呼ぶときに「Wonderful Wonderwall」と言ってくれた事。
なんか照れましたが、こんな風に海外の人に言ってもらえると思わなかったので
正直うれしかったです。
When the host announced my company name, he said 'it goes to Wonderful
Wonderwall.' I never imagined to be called like this, so I was truly flattered.

一緒に受賞した中村君とHeatherwick Studioのスタッフと。
Mr. Nakamura and staff from Heatherwick Studio, also winners.

オランダのデザイン誌「FRAME」編集長、ロバート。
FRAMEは僕の作品集を販売している出版社です。
９２年、ミラノのサローネに初めて出展した時に、見に来てくれたのが彼。
特集を組んでくれたのがうれしかったのを良く覚えています。
それ以来だったので、１５年ぶりの再開でした。
This is Robert, editor-in-chief of FRAME, the design magazine based in
the Netherlands.
FRAME is the publisher of my first monograph.
He came to my booth at the Salone di Mobile in Milan in 1992. It was
how we met and it was my first time to show at the Salone.
Frame featured a big article on my firm and I was really happy.
I have not seen him since, so this was a reunion after 15 years.

今、次の作品集の話を進めています。

We are now discussing about our second monograph.

Hella Jongerius, designer from The Netherlands.

オランダのプロダクトデザイナー、リチャード・ハッテン。
Richard Hutten, product designer from The Netherlands.

すごく短いマーストレヒト滞在でしたが、良い思い出になりました。
It was such a short stay, but good short stay.
