The iPod Tie
February 27, 2006
Well the iPod might me a fake, but i still want one. I am think one day i will have one.
But the iPOD tiehttp://www.techdigest.tv/2006/02/the_ipod_tie.html is real and and welcome addition to the crap of the year award.
The entries are really heating up. We live in a zany world.
I do not like ties, never have. And this one is in a category all its own.

Slavor Kiosk
February 27, 2006

Salvor Kiosk is a new retail concept at the Salvor studio in Soho, New York. We offer a range of products from all over the world, one country at a time. The featured country will change every three to five months. Everything in the store is sourced during travels by the shop owners: Keetja Allard, a photographer, Alisa Grifo, a set designer and Ross Menuez, a product designer. Our current featured country is Japan, our next country will be Sweden.
We opened Salvor Kiosk to offer an antidote to over-design. We consider the objects we stock to be humble, straight forward and beautiful for their simplicity and directness. Often they are traditional goods that have been developed over generations or anonymous design found in general stores, DIYs and kiosks: products designed not around one personality but the result of local aesthetics and needs. Their beauty is sometimes hard to see in today’s over-saturated / over-hyped market; our motivation to start Salvor Kiosk was to shed some light on their quiet perfection.
The store will never be static. The stock will vary greatly as it will turnover when the country changes. We will not be able to predict what we have as that will be decided by each trip. Sometimes certain goods will only be available on a very limited basis. We intend to have products that are not currently available in the United States. There will be a mix of objects, as well as some fashion and occasionally food. The goods assembled together in Kiosk become a rough portrait of each trip.
Salvor animal pillows and t-shirts are sold at the store as well.

Beaver or Otter??? USB twig or Tunebuckle????
February 26, 2006
Scientists have found a fossil of a mammal — part beaver, part otter, part platypus — that lived in China 164 million years ago.

In the conventional view, the earliest mammals were small, primitive, shrewlike creatures that did not begin to explore the world's varied environments until the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago.
Scientists have found a fossil of a mammal — part beaver, part otter, part platypus — that lived in China 164 million years ago.
But scientists are reporting today that they have uncovered fossils of a swimming, fish-eating mammal that lived in China fully 164 million years ago, well before it was thought that some mammals could have spent much of their lives in water.
The extinct species appears to have been an amalgam of animals. It had a broad, scaly tail, flat like a beaver's. Its sharp teeth seemed ideal for eating fish, like an otter's. Its likely lifestyle — burrowing in tunnels on shore and dog-paddling in water — reminds scientists of the modern platypus.
Its skeleton suggests that it was about 20 inches long, from snout to the tip of its tail, about the length of a small house cat.
This new discovery of my new favorite animal is great news for me i like a bit of the old Paleozooology.
However the TUNEBUCKLE duels with the USB Twig for the battle royal of who thinks up this crap award of 2006????
It is still early in the year, so I am sure lots of new stuff will be entered into this exclusive contest.

Hey, i have a great idea? You can put your iPOD in your pocket, wow thats a good idea.
On second thought, nevermind...
I have heard a bit about intelligent design i dont agree with it. However, the Tunebuckle is a fine example of the great unintelligent design debate.
Look out for more wacked out ideas that should of never happened........
i NEED : new i POD????= i DOPE !!!!
February 25, 2006
Well well, this touch screen thing might be catching on.
Next Tuesday the 28th, Apple is having a little get together back in Cali at HQ to drop some kinda new info on what we will be buying next. Just when you thought your iPOD video 60 was the joint, sorry... Save up your cheddar now and sling the old one on Ebay. Apple just might release a dope little joint with a larger display and integrated touch-sensitive controls.

It could all be an evil story, or it could be real. If its authentic, i need one. If i not, I would not be surprised if i it will be soon.
Stay tuned........
PS
And if it is real I think Headporter should make a good case for it ASAP.
I dont want my ruin my new toy by putting it in a wack bag from the Apple store.
As well since i am asking for bags, i need a case for a RICOH GR digital please.
Thanks.

Don't you just hate when your new SL55 AMG is just not dope enough.
I hate that inadequate feeling at the car wash or valet park.
You know the one when you just dropped six figures on a new whip and its just still kinda wack.
Now you can drive you new SL, well what was your new SL and feel proud again.
For another few bucks Fisker Coachbuild can turn your mass market Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG
into a Fisker Tramonto

PS, I am still not sure that it the SL did not look better before?
I have no idea why someone would take a good car a spend crazy cash on it?
I understand some wheels and minor tuning, but come on.
Why not just get a more expensive car to begin with??????
It is kinda like the old very primal question from my childhood: "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
The world may never know....

The Crew

Tom, Ryan, Jay,John and Berto
A few days ago i hooked up with the group that created the Vans Syndicate collection. We were all rappin' about this and that, got into what's new and crackin', etc....
They told me about the new group that was about to drop this spring, showed me some flicks, I got amped up asked if I could ask them a few questions about Syndicate and the new line.
Tom, John, Ryan, Jay, Berto and myself had a quick conversation about what makes the Syndicate collection different from the main line? I asked, why Syndicate? They said not that question... Next. What separates these shoes from the main line or Vault? They all in different ways said that these shoes were rebuilt classic Vans. The new shoes were redesigned from the inside to out with the prime focus to make the most contemporary shoe while keeping the original designs somewhat intact. The process has created a better quality shoe that resembles an OG Vans style, simple raw and dark, yet new and directional .
By using modern materials and subtle changes Syndicate has become the current staple for the guy who always wore Vans back in the day, but just wants a step up. They are for the old school hard core skaters who have grow up and never changed, just refined their tastes.
Syndicate is distributed to around 100 accounts world wide. They are not a limited edition thing, however they are limited to those who understand.
In the end i finally got the name.
I looked in the dictionary.
Syndicate: a group of individuals or organizations combined to promote some common interest.
Here is a link and a special code to check out the new collection 002.

Today, Harold Hunter passed away.
Harold was a very special soul.
He was a unique person who helped to make NYC the remarkable place that it is.
People like Harold make our world great.
I watched him grow up and am sad too see his untimely passing.

Harold Hunter, I will miss you. And we all will, today and forever.

In 1986 Cindy Crawford moved to NYC. She became one of the worlds first supermodels.
In 1988 she flipped the script an posed for Playboy.
In 1989 the Stussy World tour tee dropped, stay tuned.
In 2006 she reps Stussy in W Magazine.
And has 2 kids, Wow talk about MIL#$^&'s. She wins....Game over....

Cindy was never a waif model (a la Kate Moss), and I love her full-figured athletic look, as opposed to the anorexic models we usually see.
In the immortal words of: Black Rob, "like whoa".
Big super shout out to Cindy.
And thank you for the 400 cover shots.

I have always drifted back to this mans ideas and timeless style.
"Besides the simplicity, structure and my personal connection, the main reason I feel comfortable following his teachings so closely is how timeless simplicity can be. Helvetica fonts, lack of unnecessary and ornate elements have allowed designs created in the 1950's to look as if they could have been made today."

Josef Müller-Brockmann
Born Rapperswil (Switzerland), 9 May 1914. Studied widely before being apprenticed to a graphic designer in Zürich where he set up his own studio in 1936 and specialized in exhibition design, commercial art and photography.
Contributed to 1939 Swiss National Exhibition in Zürich. From 1942-58 designed stage sets for theatres in Zürich, Copenhagen and Munich; he also made the puppets for the production of Hindemith’s Hin und Zurück staged in Zurich in 1953. Lectured at International Design Conference in Aspen and at World Design Conference in Tokyo in 1960, and held seminars in both cities again in 1961.

DIRTY PICTURES
February 14, 2006
Dirty Pictures is a short film written and directed by Stussy LA’s Adam Weissman. He shot it a couple years ago when he was finishing up at Art Center College of design. It was recently completed and he hit me up with a finished DVD, packaged and all. The movie feels like a mix between Hitchcock, Lynch and Kiyoshi Kurosawa. It’s a eerie journey into the world of a newspaper crime photographer during a time when newspapers were the main source for visual information. Today there’s television, internet, etc, but back then the only way to see what was going on was the newspaper. The movie’s original concept was inspired by Arthur Fellig AKA Weegee, the legendary NY photographer.

“Dirty Pictures" is an atmospheric mystery set in the late 1940’s centering around tabloid crime photographer, Darren Fisher. When his editor, Roland Noone and his brother, Charles, are found dead, Darren is brought in for questioning by Detective Burroughs. Under interrogation, Darren reveals his first crime scene, his awkward relationship with his mayor brother and the stalker who doesn't agree with Darren's line of work. Are Darren’s connections to the bodies mere coincidence or something more sinister?

The film has a really noir look and lingering character. The production design, costumes and cinematography are all fit perfectly within the period, 1940's Los Angeles.

For the two months before shooting, Adam and his production crew went out and recreated the crime scenes used for photographs in the film. The film was shot around Downtown Los Angeles and Old Town Pasadena in some of the oldest building in the greater Los Angeles area. This exceptional recognition of detail frames this films attitude, character and impact.

If you want to check out what Adam’s been up to in his spare time, check the website for the DIRTY PICTURES. You can download the film in three sizes, including one for ipod videos.
Props to a job well done.....

ZVEX iMPAMP
February 13, 2006
The World's smallest vacuum tube stereo power amplifier.

iMPAMP
Zachary Vex is a music engineer and electronics fetishist whose unique effects pedals and tiny amps have earned him the adulation of discerning music-gear fanatics around the world. His little company, the Minneapolis-based Z. Vex, is best known for its hand-assembled and hand-painted effects pedals, many of which are designed to produce beautifully sick low-fi sounds. A year or two ago Z. Vex expanded into the world of amplifiers with the Nano Head, the world's smallest tube guitar amp, which fits in the palm of your hand. When coupled with a speaker cabinet, the Nano Head is capable of some excellent AC/DC-style crunch.
Now Z. Vex has announced its latest product: the iMP AMP, a stereo vacuum-tube power amplifier "intended for studio use, or with small sound sources such as iPods, mini-disc/cd players and laptops to power passive monitors. Perfect for your office or recording environment--you can put the iMP AMP right on your desk with bookshelf speakers and have a mini tube hi-fi setup for your iPod."
Joe Kid on a Stingray
February 13, 2006
This fine film explores the history of BMX and is now out on DVD.

Joe kid on a Sting-Ray –The History of BMX
BMX is an acronym for Bicycle Motocross. This film documents the evolution of
a sport created by kids who [in the 1970’s] began modifying their Schwinn Sting-
Ray bicycles to look like motorcycles. This documentary is the first film to take a
serious look at the history and evolution of BMX bicycle riding, from the streets of
1960s suburban neighborhoods to today's stadium-packed televised Dirt, Street
& Halfpipe insanity.
The sport of BMX is driven by individual riders. BMX is not made by corporations;
instead corporations base their advertising on the lifestyles of these riders. This
film captures the kind of stories that cannot come from a marketing strategy,
coaches or statistics buffs - but rather from the individual guys who turned
common street bikes into instruments of grace, strength and personal
expression. The individuals who started races and freestyle contests themselves.
It is the individualism and self-expression of these riders that makes the sport's
history, and this film, so unique.

Some things just will always make me happy. Uptown Top Ranking by Althia And Donna tells the ever so old story of the clash between Hi and Lo cultures, however it provides an unreal bottom to move the story and any dance-floor along.
What was a clash between Uptown and down has now become a call and response.
All over the world things that use to never mix too well, have now and forever changed the way we look and relate too things and ideas.
In NYC the New Era cap has been worn for a long, long time as a banner quality and pride.
These caps are made and worn with the integrity of what our culture is about.

Stussy Skull New Era Cap
Before the 80's uptown was hip-hop and down town was punk rock, during that decade these cultures started to mutate into a wonderful thing. Music, style and culture were forever changed.

THIS GNX IS NUMBER 137 OF 547
February 8, 2006
This whip should come with a theme song!!!!!

1987 was the last year for the Regal and the Grand National, but Buick decided to go out with a bang (although the rear wheel drive G-body platform would last one more year until 1988). A whooping 26,555 Turbo Regals were sold, of which 20,193 were Grand Nationals. Buick made some changes to the powertrain and power increased to 245 bhp and 355 lb-ft. The grille was slightly revised, with the teeth set further apart and the Buick emblem siting on the left side. Chrome wheels also were new.

But the big news for 1987 was the introduction of the limited edition GNX. Only available for 1987, the Buick GNX represents the height of Grand National performance. In a nod to the famous Buick GSXs of 1970-1972, the GNX logo featured a larger "X" than the other letters, just like the GSX logo. All GNXs began life as fully optioned Grand Nationals that immediately left the factory and were sent to ASC/McLaren Specialty Products in order to be extensively modified. The modifications included a more efficient Garrett air-to-air intercooler and a special pipe that connected the intercooler to the engine coated with CERMATEL (Ceramic/aluminum) for increased heat rejection and heat disipation. Front fender vents were installed to pull heat away from the engine while driving. The GNX also received a special Garrett "hybrid" T-s turbocharger that used a very lightweight ceramic impeller (as opposed to metal in standard Grand Nationals). The decreased weight allows the turbo charger to spin up much faster, thereby decreasing the turbo lag time inherent in turbo charged engines. Maximum boost was set at 15 psi and the turbo used an electric wastegate. The turbo also incorporated special low drag, dynamic turbine shaft seals, and a built in contamination trap. All of these modifications added up to 275 bhp and a whooping 360 lb-ft. To handle this extra power, the transmission was beefed up with firmer shifts and the rear axle received a longitudinal torque ladder bar with a panhard rod to help prevent wheel hop and torque twist. It also received a special rear axle housing cover made of aluminum (with GNX embossed on it) that serves as an additional strengthening element and point for the torque bar. For even more strengthening, the car body received special structural reinforcements in the form of "behind the back seat bracing" and special chassis (steel cross member between the chassis rails) bracing. The GNX was the only Regal to ever receive 16 inch wheels. The wheels were made of a lightweight alloy and the rear wheels were wider than the front. The GNX came with P245/50VR16 tires in front and P255/50VR16 tires in the rear. Special welded in fender flares were added to the wheel wells to make room for the larger wheels and tires. The standard transmission was a reprogrammed Turbo Hydra-matic 200-4R four speed hooked up to a custom torque converter. Inside, the dash had a special Steward Warner analog gauge package. All GNXs were black in color and the only exterior identification was small "GNX" badges placed on the front radiator grille and rear deck lid. Under the hood, a special turbocharger heat shield had "GNX" stamped on it, similar to the aluminum rear axle cover. All GNXs received a special numbered plaque mounted on the passenger side dash which identified the number of that particular car (1-547). Also, the Fisher body plate has "GNX" stamped on it. Special "GNX" decals were used on the intercooler and other locations and there were several hidden I.D. stampings to prevent fakes. But all of this came at a price. The cost of the GNX option was a whopping $10,995, which resulted in a final MSRP of $29,900. All out performance doesn't come cheap.

1984
February 5, 2006
Where this book and show end, is where I kind of begin. In 1984 found a new home: DOWNTOWN.
I lived on the Upper West Side, but at any chance that arose I took the 1 train downtown and it was on....
There was a world that just amazed me. I did not know at he time what was going on, or much about what it meant, or where it came from.
I just simply felt, "At-home".
Years have passed and I have realized that the era before this time helped to frame and develop many ideas that I still hold close. With out this world of: art, music, clubs and attitude my life and career would of went somewhere else. Not much has been done to document this golden age, but i am always very happy when I find something on one of my favorite unsung epochs of my generation.
